13 | Fiber: Why Your Gut Needs It & Where To Get It

Why does your body need fiber – and are you getting enough?

Fiber is much more than something that “keeps you regular.”  It plays an important role in digestion, the gut microbiome, elimination, and overall health.

In this episode of Godly Nutrition, we’re taking a closer look at fiber and why the foods God gave us in the beginning – whole grains, legumes, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds – are such important sources of it.

We’ll also look at the two major types of fiber discussed in this episode:  Soluble fiber, now called viscous fiber; and insoluble fiber, now called fermentable fiber; and how each serves a different purpose in the body.

In This Episode, You’ll Discover:

  • What dietary fiber actually is and where it comes from
  • Why fiber is important and must-have for a healthy gut
  • Why most Americans aren’t getting enough fiber
  • The difference between viscous fiber and fermentable fiber
  • How viscous fiber can help with fullness and blood sugar management
  • How fermentable fiber supports the gut microbiome
  • Why the source of your fiber matters
  • Why whole-food sources of fiber can be a better way to nourish your body than simply adding isolated fibers
  • How to gradually increase fiber while paying attention to water and digestion
  • Simple ways to add more fiber-rich foods to your everyday meals

Fiber & Gut Health

Your digestive tract is home to an enormous ecosystem of microorganisms.  Fermentable fiber provides food for beneficial bacteria in the gut, while fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids that play important roles in the health of the intestinal environment.

That means fiber isn’t simply about digestion or regularity.  What you eat can help nourish the environment inside your gut.
